JANE LEW, W.Va. (WBOY) — A racing bird from the northeast has a new home in the Mountain State in a story taken right out of a children's book.
Harrison County Animal Control made a Facebook post on Tuesday to tell the story of a pigeon that landed in a Jane Lew woman's yard that looked a little different. The bird had bands on her legs with identification information and didn't appear to be afraid of people.
The post said that after some detective work, they found that the bird was originally from Connecticut and was competing in a race in Buffalo, New York, last weekend, when strong winds apparently blew her off course, eventually landing in West Virginia.
West Virginia's most mispronounced word is a popular dog breed
Animal Control said that getting the pigeon back to Connecticut wasn't possible. So instead, they elected to keep the bird in the Mountain State by finding her a home with a local flock. In honor of the person who found her, the little lost bird was named Rhonda.
"Just another day at Harrison County Animal Control. You truly never know what's going to walk, crawl, fly, or occasionally RACE through our doors!" the post said.
