AVONDALE, Ariz. - A gutsy, late call from Alan Gustafson helped Chase Elliott and the No. 9 team turn a good Sunday into a great one at Phoenix Raceway.
A caution waved with just 29 laps to go with Elliott trying to finish off a top-10 day. But Gustafson wanted more and chose to leave Elliott out on the racetrack, one of just three teams to do so. And Elliott made it stick, powering his Kelley Blue Book Chevrolet to a third-place finish, his best showing so far in the NASCAR Cup Series Chase.
"Really proud of our Kelley Blue Book team for putting together a solid day," Elliott said. "Made some legitimate improvements I thought, which was encouraging. [Eventual race winner Tyler Reddick] got me there through [turns] one and two on the restart but to settle in and be able to hold the rest of those guys off was solid."
The result capped a solid start-to-finish race for Elliott, thanks to some early pit strategy as well. A yellow flag with 16 circuits remaining in the first segment presented crew chiefs with options early. Gustafson opted for a two-tire stop, pushing Elliott into the top five and eventually, he finished seventh, earning four bonus points.

During the stage break, the No. 9 needed four tires, pushing the team back into traffic a bit. Still Elliott was able to navigate traffic back up to 10th to pick up another point. From there, Elliott hovered in the back half of the top 10 before the late opportunity presented itself.
Elliott moved up to 10th in the Chase standings with the result. Kyle Larson was unfortunately caught up in an incident but will still head to Talladega Superspeedway next week as the points leader. Next Sunday's event at the 2.66-mile tri-oval is set for a 2 p.m. start and will air on NBC.
